Irene Shapiro

Irene Shapiro was born in Brzezhany Poland in 1925. In June 1941 her whole family was arrested and transported to the Bialystock ghetto. Subsequently she was in Lublin-Majdanek, Birkenau-Auschwitz and Blizhyn concentration camps. In November 1943 her father was killed in Majdanek and her mother in Bergen Belsen January 1945.

Ms. Shapiro was a member of the underground and participated in the uprising of the Bialystock ghetto. She was liberated by the US army in Kaunitz, Germany, April 1945 and later studied medicine in Heidelberg Germany until May 1946. At that time she was one of the displaced persons for whom a collective visa for entry to the United States was granted by President Truman.

Ms. Shapiro is a science teacher and has co-published paper(s) "Effects of Acetoxycycloheximide on Learning and Memory" and "Curriculum in Urban Ecology" (III Volumes). Her memoir "Revisiting the Shadows" in now, offered for Publication.
