Dr Lewis Reznik

Holocaust survivor and author of A Boy's Holocaust

A Boy's HolocaustLewis Reznik, a retired dentist living in Westchester County, New York, speaks to school and community groups about the lessons of the Holocaust and tutors boys preparing for their Bar Mitzvah. Dr. Reznik was born in Janów Polaski, Poland. When World War II began, he was 9 years old. After Germany invaded its neighbors, Nazi killing squads swept cities, towns and the countryside, seeking and slaughtering Jews, including his father, sister, grandmother and many other relatives. He and his family faced wrenching horrors and challenges, first in a ghetto created by the Nazis and then living off the land for nearly two years after fleeing to the surrounding forests with others who escaped death. In 1944, Russian troops liberated Poland. Lewis spent nearly four years in a displaced persons camp in the American Occupation Zone near Frankfurt, Germany. He moved to the United States in 1949 at the age of 19 and settled in Hartford, Connecticut, where he attended night school and obtained his high school diploma at 23. He received degrees from the University of Connecticut, Long Island University and the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery. He and his wife, Louise, raised two daughters, one of whom inspired him to dig into his memories and write this book.

This is Dr. Reznik's explanation for writing A Boy's Holocaust: “I want to share my experiences in order to inform and educate others about the cruelty perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators, and contrast that with the compassion and love on the part of those who risked their lives to help preserve mine. Also, I provide living proof that the Holocaust did occur despite those who continue to deny it.”
